5 Questions to Ask Yourself for the Perfect Home Redesign

Are you ready to redesign your home? Restyling your space, whether it’s one room or all of them, can be a lot simpler than you may imagine.

A good designer can work with your current furnishings and show you how small changes can have a big impact on how you use and enjoy your home.

Here are some questions to ask yourself before you have a specialist start the redesign:

1. What’s Your Budget?

What can you afford? This is the first — and most important — question you should ask yourself when considering a remodeling project.

If you don’t know your budget, the project could easily spiral out of control. So, have a clear idea of what you can spend on the redesign by considering your budget short term and long term.

2. What Rooms Are a Priority?

Start with an idea of which rooms and spaces you want to focus on. Restyling all of the rooms can be a great option but that’s not always in the budget. But remember, a fresh modern style that you enjoy now, could increase your property value down the road.

If redesigning all the rooms isn’t an option, or if you’re not sure what to do, consider the following questions:

· What spaces do you spend the most time in?

· Which rooms have you complained about frequently, wondering how to use them best?

· What areas do you entertain guests the most in?

Once you figure out your priorities, you’ll be able to clearly communicate your desires to the designer.

3. What Materials and Décor Work for Your Lifestyle?

Spend time thinking about what items like accessories, furniture fabrics, décor, etc., could work for your lifestyle and home. For example, are you single? Do you have a partner and live in a quiet home? Then adult-friendly furniture fabrics and fragile accessories could work perfectly for you.

If you have children and pets, be mindful of how you select furnishings. Keep decisions focused on durable materials and decorations. Don’t worry — durable doesn’t mean “ugly”! See what you gravitate toward and work from there.

4. Do You Know Your Personal Style?

What’s your go-to style? Industrial chic? Mid-century modern? If you’re not sure, that’s okay.

Do some digging online — hello, Pinterest! — to see how you feel about various styles, like clean and simple (think Crate and Barrel), rustic chic (think Pottery Barn), or minimalist and sleek (think Design Within Reach).

5. Are You Ready to Make Decisions?

Some people love making decisions — others not so much. However, when it comes to interior design, you have to be prepared to make the final call. Your stylist will guide you, but the final decisions are up to you.
